The First C3A Annual Symposium is officially launched!
As COP29 discussions have just ended, today C3A kicked off the inaugural C3A Annual Symposium in Paris at the World Bank Conference Center in Paris to address the critical intersection of climate science, economic policy, and financial systems. During 5 days, climate experts and governments' representatives will be gathered to explore how Ministries of Finance can navigate the challenges of the low-carbon transition and climate adaptation.
This week-long event began with the Technical & Policy Segment, a closed-door session designed to build technical capacity for Ministries of Finance. To open this important segment, we were honored to welcome back Laurence Tubiana from Baku, who shared the key takeaways from COP29 and the road ahead.
"What happened in Baku was really positive, but we still need to focus more on climate than security. This moment is critical, and that’s why I’m so happy to be here for this Symposium. We must seize the opportunity of the sustainable economy. We cannot fight climate change without global cooperation, and we can’t succeed without your (Ministries of Finance) investments. We have to take this train and we have to take it now", emphasized Laurence Tubiana
During this first segment, working sessions focus on climate-related policy, modeling, and transition scenarios, aimed at supporting country partners on the path to sustainable economies. Today's discussions and workshops will cover pressing topics such as fiscal policy and debt sustainability, climate risks, nature and biodiversity, green innovation, and industrial policy.
Then on December 6, the Research & Leadership Segment will bring together policymakers, climate scientists, economists, and leaders to discuss the critical intersection of climate science and policy, addressing the financial and economic hurdles of the low-carbon transition. During this one-day segment, 16 insightful sessions discussing recent research and policy developments; 4 high-level roundtable discussions with representatives from Ministries of Finance, Development Banks, MDBs and climate experts; and more than 12 parallel sessions featuring research and policy papers presented by selected contributors from our recent call for submissions will feed this Symposium.
On Friday, we will have the pleasure to welcome high-level speakers, including Paschal Donohoe (Head of the Eurogroup), Martin Wolf (Financial Times), Amar Bhattacharya (Brookings Institution), María José Martínez (Deputy Minister of Finance, Dominican Republic), Cristina Reis (Brazil Ministry of Finance), Carolyn Fischer (Research manager, World Bank), Celine Kauffmann (IDDRI), Nick Stern (LSE), Zeph Nhleko (Chief economist, DBSA), Murtaza Syed (Head of ecosystem, AIIB), Frederico Gil Sander (WB), Sylvie Goulard (SDA Bocconi), Leon Clarke (Bezos Earth Fund), Tim Lenton (Exeter University), Luis Pereira Da Silva (Getúlio Vargas Foundation), Vera Songwe (Co-chair of the HLEG on Climate Finance), Stephane Straub (WB, Chief Economist, infrastructure), Simon Sharpe (C3A, S curve economics), Remy Rioux (FICS, AFD), Zhang Xiliang (Tsinghua University), Laura Carvalho (OSF), Laura Britt Fermo (Group Head, ASEAN+3 Macroeconomic Research Office), Kevin Carey (World Bank), and Sam Mugume Koojo (Uganda Ministry of Finance, Deputy Co-chair of the Coalition of Finance Ministers for Climate Action).
